This is a wonderful antique impressionistic oil painting done by a very talented artist named B. Wright" who was probably a Vermont regional artist during the late 19th century into the early 20th century - with this relatively large painting, the artist has depicted a beautiful bucolic late summer landscape with the Winooski River shown in the foreground - the viewer sees the river flowing gently in front of some thick bush foliage to the right of which is a large oak tree which has some leaves that are starting to turn to their fall colors - next to the large tree, is a small tree or bush which has already turned to its fall colors of red-orange - to the right of the large tree is a sandy path that leads to the water where the livestock can come & drink - beyond the bushes & trees are wide meadows where the livestock can roam - beyond the meadows is a farm house as well as a barn & out-buildings - in researching the Winooski River on the internet, I came across an antique photo postcard that showed this scene almost exactly as it would have been in the 1920's - it was entitled "the Bailey Farm by Winooski River, Montpelier, VT - it was a black & white postcard photo, but, the scene fit this painting almost exactly but for the fact that the painting is approximately 30 years older. Wright, the very capable artist, whose signature was placed in the lower left corner of the painting just below a log which highlights the signature, created a series of wonderfully integrated horizontal levels of multiple colors in this painting starting with the river itself - the river was painted using a palette of various shades of blue, gray & off-white to depict the flow of the river - next, is a horizontal line of bush foliage as well as the large tree & its foliage, all of which are done in lovely shades of green & red-brown colors - these are some of the best depictions of bush & tree foliage that I have seen in an antique oil painting - the multiple colors are incredible. Beyond the bushes & trees is a large grazing field made up of various shades of green - at the other end of the field is a line of more bush & tree foliage painted again with various shades of green & red-brown colors - the farmhouse, barn, & outbuildings are just behind the line of bushes & trees where the artist set off the farm buildings by using pale gray & red colors to set them apart from the foliage - thereafter comes a horizontal segment of mountains & high hills painted by the artist to create a sense of distance between the mountains & the farm buildings. The artist used very pale blue & beige colors to emphasize the distance of the mountains - the large upper segment of the painting is a robbins-egg blue sky interspersed with puffy off-white & pale gray clouds floating throughout the sky. This item is in the category "Art\Paintings".
