In oil on canvas, signed A. Polletine'89 lower right, titled and signed verso Item # 811KQS25P. Typical of Alfred Pollentine's Venetian views, the present painting is incredibly romantic and full of life.
With a palette full of pastels and vibrant colors, he mixes colors with an eye towards realism and a brush-stroke bordering on Impressionistic. All of his works explore the relationship of the buildings and architecture versus the waters surrounding them and the present painting is particularly interesting as the canal almost becomes part of the buildings and the edges of the water are almost non-existent. A rich moment likely captured during the golden hours of dusk, the sky is intricate and brilliant as the clouds capture the end-of-day light and reflect them down on the teal and gold water below. The painting remains on its original lining with a patch applied verso by our conservator at time of cleaning and restoration.
It is signed lower right in his typical script A. The painting is housed in a period carved gilt-wood frame.
19 5/8" H x 23 1/4" W x 2 1/4 D [frame]. Professionally cleaned and conserved, hole patched lower right quadrant with associated inpainting (in boat, along mast and in sails), inpainting touchups along bottom edge, light surface craquleure. Period frame with some losses and chips throughout.
