V Large Fine Antique Victorian Oil Painting Portrait Young Girl Society Beauty

This is a very large fine Victorian oil painting depicting a young society beauty at the turn of the 19. Century by the eminent French Royal Academy and Paris Salon painter. Is signed by the artist, and also titled and dated 1901. This important full-length portrait by one of the worlds foremost society painters of the period hangs in a newly commissioned bespoke gold metal leaf neoclassical frame. As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having been newly professionally cleaned and re-varnished.

In the final quarter of the 19th century Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant was one of the worlds leading painters of Orientalist scenes and society portraits the favourite artist of the English aristocracy whose patrons included Queen Victoria and the Pope. North American tycoons queued-up with patriarchs of the English nobility to commission portraits of their wives and daughters. Today, the rich and famous dream of being photographed by Mario Testino or Annie Leibovitz, back in 1900 they wanted to be painted by Benjamin-Constant, and his society portraits brilliantly convey the individual personality of the sitter. Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant was awarded a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1896, made a commander of the Legion dHonneur, and with Jean-Léon Gérôme foundered the Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français.

Paintings by Benjamin-Constant are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Musée dOrsay in Paris, and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. (framed) 150cm x 116cm (59 x 45¾). (canvas only) 131cm x 98cm (51½ x 38½). Fine gold metal leaf neoclassical swept frame.

Newly professionally cleaned and re-varnished. We do not sell dirty, damaged or unframed works of art.

Where necessary the paintings we sell are cleaned and restored by Fine Art Restoration est. 1974 or Simon Gillespie Studio, as seen on BBC Television's'Fake or Fortune' and'Britain's Lost Masterpieces'. Academy Fine Paintings is an international fine art dealership based in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire, England.

We specialise in 19th century British and European oil paintings and early 20th century Post-Impressionist works by some of the most important artists of the period. My name is Gavin Claxton and in addition to being an art dealer I also work as an antiques and fine art expert on BBC television. Clients should always bear in mind that the vast majority of paintings we deal in are antiques - works over 100 years old and frequently much older and will therefore invariably retain some evidence of aging, historical damage and repair. During its lifetime a 150-year old oil painting may well have been exposed to extremes of heat or cold, intrusion of water, bumps, cuts and natural age-related deterioration, all of which require restoration.

When a listing's heading reads'by' and is followed by the artist's full name (or the artist's initials, if his full name is unrecorded), the work is in our opinion by the artist. When the term'signed by' is used, in our opinion the work has been signed by the artist. When the expression "attributed to" is used, the work is in our opinion possibly a work by the artist, in whole or in part.

When the expression'circle of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence. When the expression'follower of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil. When the expression'manner of' is used, the work is in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date. When the term "after" is used, the work is in our opinion a copy or imitation (of any date) of a work by the artist.

When the term'bears signature' is used in our opinion the signature is by a hand other than that of the artist. Great care and much time is taken over the safe transportation of the paintings we sell.

No second-hand bubble-wrap and reused cardboards boxes here! Before leaving us, each painting takes us approximately 2 to 3 hours to properly i.

The entire package is then bound in black shrink wrap (as used by airline companies) and a final later of waterproof cloth tape is applied to all corners, ends and edges. UK clients are also most welcome to collect from us in South Buckinghamshire.

We are very aware that not all of clients are in a position to pay the entire sale price upfront. Paintings will be dispatched to clients only once the total balance has been paid in full.

Its ironic that 99.9% of the worlds fine art is owned by the wealthiest 0.01% of the population when so many of the artists who created it lived and died in relative poverty. The fact is that the art world, especially in times of global recession, thrives on inequality. But whilst the possibility of purchasing works by Leighton, Holman Hunt, Constable, and Turner is always going to be the preserve of the super-rich it has never been a better time to invest in works by their contemporaries.
