Bonnie Portnoy, who is Samuel Daken's granddaughter, was kind enough to inform me that , Samuel Tilden Daken is correct, though for unknown reasons he changed the spelling of his surname from Daken to Dakin when he was about 40. BUT HE NEVER used the name "Sydney" or "Sidney"... Sydney was his daughter's name...
Portnoy's website at: tildendaken. Com/legacy has some more interesting information about this very talented artist. This painting will also be published in her upcoming book about Mr. Portnoy & allow publishable photographs of this painting to be taken. If you have ever been to the Oakland Museum of California, you may have seen some of Samuel Tilden Daken's other original oil paintings. This is only one of several museums that permanently house Daken's oil paintings! Besides being an old antique oil painting with great aesthetic merit, this painting should also have great appeal to historians because this is a 1911 view of what I believe is Lake Tahoe in the distance, from what is now called the "Van Sickle Bi-State Park Hiking Trail". If you are a collector of California art... How many other ORIGINAL 100+ year old views of the Lake Tahoe area have you seen for sale? Many of these old antique views have been acquired by Museums or are in other very important collections, where many of them will never see the light of day again! To up the ante, this is not only a 1911 view of what I believe is Lake Tahoe, but this is also an original oil painting that was done by famous California artist Samuel Tilden Daken! Daken's careful observation of the atmospheric conditions captures the subtle effects of the early evening light reflecting off the landscape. His ability to do this leaves the viewer with a peaceful feeling and takes us back to a period in time that cannot be replaced! Samuel Tilden Daken was born in Bunker Hill, Illinois on June 14, 1876. At age three he made the cross-country trek with his parents to California. He lived briefly in Sacramento before settling in San Francisco where he spent his early years.
At the turn of the century he worked as a fresco painter and decorated many homes in San Francisco. The fire of 1906 destroyed the homes that housed his murals as well as his studio on Van Ness Avenue and much of his early work.
He soon opened an art school in Santa Rosa before joining the art faculty at Ursuline College in Sonoma. For unknown reasons, Samuel Tilden Daken used the pseudonym Sidney (incorrect, as mentioned above) Tilden Dakin after 1910. By 1932 he was a resident of Los Angeles. Like many artists during the Depression, survival was difficult for Daken. His last years were spent in a mountain cabin near Georgetown, California where he attempted gold mining. He died of liver cancer on April 24, 1935. He is best known for his landscapes of Lake Tahoe, the redwoods, Marin and Sonoma counties.
Exhibited: Elks Club (Santa Rosa), 1908; Panama Pacific International Exposition, 1916; Pandora's Box (Sacramento), 1922. Works held: Fresno Museum; Saint Mary's College (Moraga); Sonoma County Museum; Oakland Museum; Nevada Museum (Reno); Depot Park Museum (Sonoma). This oil on canvas measures 22.25" by 30.25", with its' frame. The actual painting measures 16" by 24" and is signed and dated "1911" by Daken, on the lower right. The painting's canvas has a thin, 6" vertical rip (with paint loss) on the upper part of the sky; some surface dirt and there is a 2" by 16 patch on the back of the canvas. Otherwise, the painting is in good, overall condition. The 3.5" wide and 2.5" deep frame has a 16 long crack on the inner liner and a few minor scratches and nicks elsewhere.
When examining the painting under the ultraviolet light, I did not find evidence of inpainting. Daken's signature and date are original to the painting and they do not fluoresce under the ultraviolet light. As stated above, this is not only a 1911 original oil painting that I believe is a view of Lake Tahoe, but this is also a WONDERFUL 1911 oil painting that was done by famous California artist- Samuel Tilden Daken!
All packages are properly and professionally packed, as well as being insured. I try to provide the best customer service possible. Due to the quality of the art, I do not risk damaging paintings by taking them off of their stretcher (or liner) and rolling them up, as these are not new paintings.
