A Very Fine and Potentially Rare English Oil on Canvas of the'Holbein Gate' in London Circa 1720. Here we have a rare and possibly unique depiction of the'Holbein Gate' which formed the entrance to Henry VIII's great Whitehall Palace which ran parallel to the river Thames and had a London street thoroughfare running through it and discecting it into two parts..
Built in 1531 / 2 and destroyed by fire in 1759 and showing what seem to me to be possibly later buildings built around it. The gate was named after the court painter Johannes Holbein who famously painted'The Ambassadors' and portraits of Thomas Cromwell, Thomas More and Erasmus..
There is a label on the verso which states'London circa 1695'.... I could be wrong but looking at the clothes and carriage in the scene they look a little later than 1695.... Perhaps one of my historian customers could enlighten us!
The work could be a capriccio - similar to many of Canaletto's compositions - whereby various interesting buildings are put together with the main focus building to create a more favourable picture but which are actually miles away from each other! I don't think this is one of those compositions and I believe the square actually existed in front of the Holbein Gate thereby giving us a snapshot from 300 years ago - in reality a' photograph' from 1720! A super picture from the school of Canaletto but on a much more modest scale..... In tip top condition and mounted in a very appealing period frame which sets it off beautifully.
A very special and rare early English London'street scene' showing us the long lost entrance to Henry VIII's largest palace and surounding properties - an oil study which I wholeheartedly recommend. And which make a fine statement piece and conversation point. Measurements including the frame 25" x 18".
