VINTAGE BERNIE WOODMAN SAILORS' VALENTINE (9) WITH ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING BY C. Woodman was a self-taught designer and craftsman of contemporary Sailors' Valentines based in Marstons Mills, Massachusetts. He created intricate designs using natural sea shells that were never colored or shellacked. Several different artists were employed to paint nautical scenes in the center portion. Woodman even handcrafted the octagonal shadow boxes he used for his valentines. His original designs and superior craftsmanship gained him great notoriety among collectors. This particular piece measures about 9 in diameter. The central image is an original oil on board image of the "Barque Clarence", a British sailing vessel used to transport immigrants and supplies during the early to mid-1800's. The painting is based on an original found in the National Maritime Museum in London. The round painting measures about 3 in diameter and is signed by artist Christopher J. Guise, a "marine artist" who lives on Cape Cod in Provincetown. The inside bottom of the valentine is signed B.

If you're not already familiar with "Sailors' Valentines", they came into use between 1830 and 1880 when enterprising residents of the Barbados Islands (West Indies) made these octagonal sea shell items in a cottage industry atmosphere. The artwork sometimes included romantic sayings like "I'm Yours - Be Mine", "Forget Me Not, "Love to My Sister, etc. Since sea shell art was very popular during the Victorian era, sailors brought home these "valentines" as souvenirs for their female loved ones. To be an original Bernie Woodman valentine. Condition of this Bernie Woodman Sailor's Valentine is EXCELLENT.

All the shells are intact and the oil painting is totally undamaged. The inside of the glass has a very slight haze that is barely visible from certain angles. The octagonal wooden box is also in great shape. The top back side of the box has a handwritten inventory number assigned by the previous owner. Overall, this heirloom-quality Sailors' Valentine looks fantastic and displays beautifully.

Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. Woodman passed away in 1986 and his valentines rarely come up for sale. Original Oil Painting by C.
