Large Antique Portrait Painting Gilt Wood Frame by George Dury Circa 1850s
It was said to be the portrait of a Tennessee politician's wife, but the wife of the previous owner could not recall any other details about this fabulous piece. It's very well painted as you can see, befitting the work of a man whose portraits reside in the Tennessee State Museum and many other places. George Dury painted a well-known portrait of Abraham Lincoln and this portrait of a lady bears a striking resemblance to a young Mary Todd Lincoln, although I cannot say for sure who the sitter is. Housed in a wonderful, ornate yet clean-lined gilt frame, bearing the label of New York publisher and art dealer C (Christian) Klackner. The label darkened from age and very faint without aid of a flash to read it. The plaque reading "George Drury [sic], 19th century American"...

The plaque is misspelled and the name should be Dury, without an R. Condition: The painting is in very good condition, with a small 1/2 area of paint loss on the right side of the sitter's hair, and the usual aging conditions. There are three or four small repairs to the back of the canvas. The Neoclassical American gilt frame having some gesso loss, most noticeably 1 along the right middle side of the frame.

Size: Sight: 24 1/2" w 29 1/2" t Frame: 39 1/2" tall x 34 1/2" w Frame is approximately 5 1/2 wide. From Wikipedia: George Dury was a Bavarian/American portrait painter who emigrated to the United States and settled in Nashville, TN.
