LARGE and BEAUTIFUL Early 1900's Portrait study Antique Oil Painting. Fine large early 20th Century portrait oil painting on canvas of a young lady. It is a beautifully observed study with an excellent rendition of the patterned gown. In good condition, some craquleur and some aged varnish.
The portrait measures 20 inches x 30 inches and 30" x 40" in its 19th century gilt frame (some losses). A lovely period portrait by a renowned British Artist!Harry Jonas studied at the St John's Wood School of Art, and then began painting seriously in a studio in Chelsea. Afterwards he shared a studio in Brook Green with John Armstrong. He travelled extensively, especially in the 1920's when he befriended fellow artists such as Utrillo, Modigliani and Picasso in Paris.
He became a society portraitist, painting Lord Beaverbrook, Iris Mountbatten and Elsa Lanchester among others. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, and at the Grosvenor and Mattheisen Galleries and founded a small group of younger artists'The Guild of St Luke' which included Joseph Sickert, son of Walter, and Francis West. His works can be found in the collections of the Beaverbrook Gallery, Montreal, Manchester City Art Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. Create listings that get noticed!
