"Burying Treasure " English School, late 19th century oil painting on canvas, unframed. Canvas: 36 by 48 inches (3 by 4 feet) Exceptional large scale historical oil painting dating to the late 19th century, depicting this figure burying treasure in a woodland glade.
The subject is unknown, but likely an historical narrative or from taken from literature. Beautiful detailing throughout, as well as captivating twilight and excellent toning. It is possible the work is unfinished as it appears unsigned.Poynter was slightly later than the main body of Pre-Raphaelite painters, though was closely connected with that group, his sister being married to Edward Burne-Jones. A work of superb quality and a staggering size, measuring 3 by 4 feet (36 x 48 inches).
Condition report: The painting is in very sound condition. There is varnish discolouration and abrasions above the subjects head and climbing the tree behind him.
