A Lovely Early 18th Century Portrait Oil on Canvas of an Attractive Young Lady. Circle of Charles Jervas Dublin - London (1675 - 1739). A first rate rendition of a young lady - the wife or daughter of a minor aristocrat or successful merchant with many of the stylistic hallmarks of the Irish artist Charles Jervas.
The lady is a beauty in a reserved way and carries none of the aloofness of countenance or display of wealth (pearls - rings) that most of the sitters in this period would show us.. This is understated elegance - a lady who is sure of herself and her position in life in a world very much dominated by'gentlemen'. I would suggest the daughter of wife of a middling class merchant made good but reluctant to show off indulgent possessions... Perhaps from a puritan leaning family? Wearing a fine red dress with the only concession to fashion being her decolletage...Charles Jervas came over to London from Ireland and took up employment as an assistant artist working for Godfrey Kneller helping with the huge number of commissions entrusted to the most prominent painter of the period. It is written that Kneller was not entirely impressed with some of Jervas's work - and found him brash and boastful - although Jervas did eventually become a favourite himself of King George Ist becoming the'Principle painter in Ordinary' in 1723 after his employers death. Jervas's life is well documented and much can be found our about the man and his associates with further reading..... And in fact he himself set up his own studio system using several helpers and talented students - this could be a work by one of those very gentlemen.... A super picture and in first class order - age related craquelure but sound and secure and ready to hang.
Mounted in a later but perfectly matching gilt frame which compliments the work very well. Labels verso tell us that the painting was relined and cleaned on the 12 / 12 / 1966. A quite striking and very decorative early portrait with great charm and impact'on the wall'!
Measurements including the frame 38" x 32". I hope you will afford me the privilege of taking time to look at my offerings on here. I will offer you honesty and transparency. I will clearly show you the entire work of art - front and back - and detail all it's good and bad points.
