Hobley was born in Oxfordshire, but lived his childhood and early adult life in Bradford, including his initial art education. He was apprenticed to a Bradford draper, but was drawn to art and attended evening classes at Bradford School of Art, where he developed his drawing skills. He gained a scholarship at the National Art Training School (now The Royal College of Art) in London, and went to Paris to study at the Academie Julian and at LEcole des Beaux-Arts. He gained a reputation for his landscape and genre paintings.

He exhibited work at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Paris Salon, Royal Academy, and Royal Cambrian Academy, who elected him an Associate Member in 1903. In 1906 he was elected to the Lake Artists Society. His work is in many private collections and in public galleries at Bradford, Liverpool, and Gateshead. Igned and dated lower right by the artist, Edward G. The painting measures on the stretcher 13" by 24" inches.

Housed in a decoratively moulded gilt frame measuring 15.75" by 26.75" Inches. The painting is in good condition on re-lined canvas, it may benefit a light clean. The frame is age tarnished with chips and losses to the decoration at the corners.
