BARBIZON SCHOOL LANDSCAPE OF FARM OVERLOOKING A MARSH Circa late 19th century, oil on canvas relined on panel; signed JAN'82 lower right Item # 709EDZ27P. A vivid little work that exudes a certain moodiness and pensive character in its depiction of a stormy sky rolling away, there is an optimism in the scene as the blue peeks through the thick cloud cover. The landscape shows the waters of a marsh with extensive foliage growth and long grasses before a large farm house over which a flock of birds move across the sky.

A gentle and symmetrical brush stroke leaves the lower half of the painting dreamy and orderly while the artist brings a certain fervor and chaos to the brush strokes throughout the stormy sky; this adds a touch of drama to the rolling and furling cloud cover. In the lower right corner the painting is signed JAN / 82 in the same red pigment that outlines the roofline of the distant house. 19 1/4" W x 11 1/2" H [frame]; 15 1/2" W x 8" H [panel]. Condition Report: Frame is quite early and possibly original with gesso losses in three corners, some gesso patching and inpainting. Canvas relined on artist board during the late 20th century.

Minor surface grime, eventually the painting will be more vibrant if cleaned. Please scroll down to view all detailed images of this piece.
