A highly unusual and rare antique Russian Impressionist oil on canvas laid on board portrait painting by a well listed Soviet Russian artist Boris Anatolievich Sholokhov, born 1919, graduate of the prestigious Repin and Surikov Art Institutes, lived and worked in Moscow, participated in all major Soviet Art Exhibitions since 1950. The artist is well listed in all Russian and Western references. Boris Sholokhov is best known for portraits of children most notably from his trips to an elite pioneer camp in Crimea "Artek", where he visited almost every summer and painted the children. The painting listed is a portrait of a high school age girl going through state mandated paramilitary training, which was obligatory for all teenagers high school age in preparation for the future service in the Red Army. The boys typically went through military drills shooting practice and gun cleaning and assembly, while the girls, as pictured here went through training to become battle field medics to assist in the field with the wounded and the field hospitals. The young lady pictured is equipped with a standard field medics side bag bearing a red cross. She is decorated with a red star on her left chest. Interestingly, she is pictured in a assembly pose with her hands placed behind the small of her back. Very interesting vintage antique painting illustrating Russian Soviet Youth paramilitary training in the height of the cold war. Expressive facial features, bright vivid colors, broad strokes.
