Antique Impressionist Tonalism Painting by Charles Appel 1920
Here is your chance to own an investment quality painting by a well listed and sought after American Impressionist Artist! This painting appears to be all original with no damage other than some horizontal age crazing in the paint visible in the photos. It is on the original wood stretcher and framed in a very nice carved wood frame. The painting measures 12"x16" and the frame is 16"x19 1/2".

It is hard to find nice early paintings that are in such nice original condition. I think the painting would brighten up a bit if cleaned but it looks great as is.

This would be an excellent gift for that hard to please art collector. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Charles Appel is known for romantic landscapes and marine paintings in Tonalist and Impressionistic styles. He was a pupil of Francis Luis Mora and William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art and of Frank Vincent DuMond at The Art Students League. The major influence on his career, however, was George Inness.

Most of his life was spent in East Orange, New Jersey from where he was active in New York art circles and was elected a member of the Salmagundi Club in 1906. He studied at the New York School of Art, New York City, with Francis Luis Mora and William Merritt Chase, and at The Art Students League, New York City, with Frank Vincent DuMond. Formerly in the collection of Barns, Robert. Acquired from Janus Gallery, Madison, Wisconsin 2001. Private collection New Jersey, since 2001.
