He was a genre master, he painted scenes from everyday life in Tyrol and from the recent history of Germany. One of the most popular subject on beer stein was "Grandfather's Dancing Lesson" - I have included it in my pictures. This paintings is made by oil on oak board. That was one of the most popular media and one of the most popular size created by Franz von Defregger. He created only few large paintings, but quite a number of smaller ones on oak boards. This painting is one of the variations of the painting called "Die Brautwerbung" - "The Matchmaking". This large version of this painting approx. 30" X 20" is kept in Art Gallery in Munich. There are also several smaller size versions created by Defregger for sale to the public. Some of these smaller versions are kept in different museums in Germany and Austria. I have also included in my pictures a photo of the big one and also a an old photo of another version. The old photo was taken by the very famous German photographer Franz Hanfstaengl. The photo was taken in 1890 from a picture made in 1882 - 3 years from when the large one was painted. The figure placement and colors a slightly different - you can see that the boy stands closer to the door - there is no gap - and the linen in the basket is different color from the one in the large picture. This variation is actually much closer the one I have. The picture shows a gentleman who came with his son to make a marriage proposal to one of the girls of the house.
It is full of live and every figure, every person on the picture has his own character. The painting itself shows the hand of a great master.
It is so finely painted you can hardly see the brush strokes - in fact you need a magnifying glass to see them. Very few people can do this sort of work nowadays. The concept art killed the skills - why try if you can just make a few strokes and call it a work of genius?
But the old masters, especially the ones who spent years and years learning not just the art but the craft of art as well can still surprise us with something like that. The painting is signed F.
Defregger in lower left corner. The board itself is 9.5"X7.5".It comes with the nice and elegant antique gilt frame that I believe is original to the painting. The frame is 14"X12". The painting itself is in excellent untouched condition. The frame shows some very minimal wear consistent with the age - overall a perfect condition for a beautiful work of art of museum quality!
