18th CENTURY OIL ON CANVAS DUAL PORTRAIT SCHOOL OF ARTHUR DEVIS (1712 1787)

A Rare Mid 18th Century Oil on Canvas of a well to do Gentleman and his Wife. School of Arthur Devis (1712 - 1787).

A rare and splendid mid 18th century oil on canvas genre scene of a well to do couple dating from around 1750 and from the school or circle of the well know artist of this style of portraiture - Arthur Devis (1712 - 1787). These type of works were popular in the mid 1700's with artists such as Devis and William Hogarth (1697 - 1764) being exponents of the genre....

Another well known painter of a very similar style was the French artist (although born in Berlin) Philippe Mercier (1689 - 1760) and they were all commissioned by wealthy patrons who wished to show their friends and competitors that they had the funds and the status to make the social statement of a family portrait. Another lesser known but equally interesting artist of the period was Lewis Vaslet who was born in York and died in Bath (1742 - 1808). This particular piece is a charming example of the slightly'naive' style and questionable perspective which was the hallmark of all of the above with the exception of Hogarth. Our artist is unknown but certainly had the ability and panache to obtain the commission and has executed it supremely well...

One or two unusual'props' are evident - the garden urn with a Pigeon perched upon it, the gentleman's tricorn hat stuffed under his arm rather than held more formally and his wife displaying a Rose..... All symbolic and the meanings known only to the sitters.

In super condition - lined in the past fifty years and housed in a very attractive period gilt gesso frame - ready to hang. A very special oil study which I wholeheartedly recommend. And which would make a notable addition to a collection of early family portraiture..

Measurements including the frame 23" x 19". I hope you will afford me the privilege of taking time to look at my offerings on here. I will offer you honesty and transparency. I will clearly show you the entire work of art - front and back - and detail all it's good and bad points. I will not be vague about age or provenance or any later work carried out.

I also offer inspection at my home on all pieces with no obligation. It has to be good enough to grace my own home should it not sell. I hope you will find something you like - please message me with questions - You will find me accommodating and friendly.
